As a writer, I think I have a pretty cool job. There cannot be many occupations where you are allowed to spend countless hours in private contemplation, just imagining. Clearing my head (which often involves going for a walk or taking a cycle ride along the beach) is a very important aspect of my creative process (or at least that is what I tell my family and the people I work for). When my mind drifts (and it doesn´t take much to start this process), it takes me down a whole new career path, one that I spent most of my teenage years (who am I kidding, most of the last four decades) dreaming of. In my mind, I´m a rock star. There are many similarities between the roles of writer and rock star (and not all of them are positive): They are both creative jobs. They can both lead to fame and fortune (although most of us will be lucky if our creative output pays the rent). Some writers might even lead a bit of a rock and roll lifestyle (I now limit my creative stimulants to several really (really) strong cups of coffee throughout the day). Success in both careers can equally be attributed to luck as much as it can be to talent (although there is no substitute for hard work). You can wear what you want to work (although I´m perhaps a little too old for a spandex jumpsuit). There are plenty of ´´industry-type´´ people who will try and take advantage you. Most people who aspire to become either writers or rock stars fail. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Juan G. Molinari. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/055060/bk_acx0_055060_sample.mp3. Stop being a poser. Start being a Christian. Is your faith for real? How about your walk with God? If everyone who claimed to love Jesus actually did, this world would be a drastically different place. We currently live in a time when being a poser Christian is not only easy, it seems to be purposely overlooked - especially where the act of reflecting Jesus is concerned. Claiming to love Jesus without following Him is bogus, fraudulent, and frankly not Christian at all. God has called you to be set apart, to live authentically, to walk in a genuine Jesus swagger. He wants followers, not pretenders. From Christian blogger and pastor Jarrid Wilson, Jesus Swagger is about calling out the phony, showing the pretender the door, and welcoming the characteristics of Jesus with an open soul. If you are suspicious of your own motivations or even your life as a Christian, it´s time to be honest, come clean, and get real. It´s time to take the Jesus swagger evaluation test and start living a life that screams ´´Christ follower.´´ PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio. 1. In her dynamic new devotional, Godly Freedom, Bible teacher and best-selling author Rebecca Livermore taps into the truths penned long ago by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. To put it bluntly, the Corinthians were a big hot mess. Among other things, they dealt with issues such as: Sexual sin Chaotic worship Lawsuits between believers Many other types of division Paul caught wind of the troubles, and wrote them a very straightforward letter - which we now know as the book of 1 Corinthians - to deal with the issues. When you consider what a mess the church in Corinth was, it´s easy to stand in judgment of them - until you realize that they were people just like us. That´s the bad news. The good news is that the principles laid out in the 24 devotionals in this book provide modern day applications to the truths laid out in 1 Corinthians. Applying these lessons will keep you from making the mistakes the Corinthians made. Each devotional includes a passage of scripture from 1 Corinthians, a story or illustration related to the scripture, a prayer, and suggestions for applying the truths. This book will take you on a journey - a journey to Corinth, but even more importantly, a journey to becoming a more mature believer in Jesus. It is for any Christian that desires a closer walk with God. Rebecca Livermore is a best-selling author, blogger, and the cofounder of Ordinary Believer, a ministry focused on helping "everyday" Christians apply biblical truths in meaningful ways. She has been married to her husband, Chuck, for more than 30 years and is the mother of two young adults who affectionately nicknamed her "Hot Rod Mama". 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jennifer L. In this hour, Mario Vargas Llosa is one of the godfathers of Latin American fiction. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. He also once ran for president of his native country, Peru. Politics and literature are the driving forces in his life. And, they often come together. For instance, one of his most recent novels is The Feast of the Goat - the story of Rafael Trujillo, the infamous dictator of the Dominican Republic. Vargas Llosa tells Steve Paulson why he found the subject so compelling and what became of his own political ambitions. Then, the politician and the playwright Vaclav Havel was known first as the romantic poet in blue jeans, the dissident Czech playwright who was thrown in jail for his anti-communist plays, and who emerged to inspire the so-called Velvet Revolution that overthrew the Soviet Union. Havel was elected President of the Czech Republic and served from 1993 to 2003. Near the end of his time in office, Steve Paulson spoke with him about the role of writers and artists in a democracy. Next, some of the largest demonstrations in American history took place just a few blocks from our studios, in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Republican Governor Scott Walker had proposed cutting pensions and benefits for thousands of public employees. For days, hundreds of thousands of peaceful protestors occupied the State Capitol. They ate there. The slept there. And they wrote there. Among them was sleep-in activist and blogger, Christie Taylor. After that, V.S. Naipaul won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001. A Trinidadian-British citizen, he’s known for his novels focusing on the legacy of the British Empire’s colonialism. Among them, the modern classic called A Bend in the River. Steve Paulson talks with him.Following that, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian novelist whose book Half of a Yellow Sun is set during the period of civil violence surrounding the creation of Biafra.
